Meet the Staff
Project Read Director,
Shauna K. Brown
In March of 2001, Shauna K. Brown was appointed the director of Project Read. Shauna grew up in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, and she moved to Utah in 1993. She completed her graduate certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at Brigham Young University in 2003. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations with a minor in Spanish from BYU in 2000. She was formerly a reporter and editor for The Lake Mountain Interactive and The Crossroads Journal, newspapers serving Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain. She also taught piano for 19 years.
“I came to Project Read because I love working with people, and I love helping them and seeing the light come on as a whole new world of books and reading opens up to them,” Shauna said. “Reading affects every aspect of a person’s life: we can help people improve their lives!”
Shauna’s interests include hanging out with her husband Dennis and spending time with their five children, playing the piano, the organ, and the guitar, dancing, traveling, any outdoor activity (hiking, camping, horseback riding, biking, etc.), playing with her cats, Athena and Maggie, and of course, reading. Some of Shauna’s favorite books include To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card, A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L’Engle, Executive Orders by Tom Clancy, The Reckoning by David Halberstam, The Color of Water by James McBride, and Wild Swans by Jung Chang.
Project Read Program Coordinator,
Wayne Bulsiewicz
Wayne started at Project Read in December of 2010. Originally from Maplewood, NJ, Wayne came to Utah to attend Brigham Young University. He graduated from BYU with a degree in American Studies and has worked as a Sales and Marketing professional with an interest in start up and entrepreneurial ventures. He learned about Project Read from his wife who has been a tutor since 2009.
One of his main goals is to secure more partnerships with local and regional businesses. “Project Read is an established program that has helped improved the lives of thousands of people in Utah County since the program began in 1984. I would like to work closely with businesses and leaders in the area to make sure those that need Project Read’s help can find it and to raise the funds needed to provide them the help they need. Improving literacy can provide a better workforce, reduce the need for assistance programs, and improve our community for businesses and families alike.”
Project Read Volunteer Coordinator,
Sue Bartlett
In February 2004, Sue Bartlett joined the Project Read team. She is originally from Chicago, Illinois, but she currently calls Provo, Utah home. Sue has lived in Utah for the past 16 years with her husband Lee. She has two daughters and three granddaughters who are the light of her life.
Sue came to Project Read because “I was looking for a job, I interviewed here, and I wanted to work here.” She turned down three jobs to work here.
When she is not at Project Read, Sue enjoys being a grandmother, spending time with her husband and family, reading, and volunteering in the community. Sue enjoys literature written for young readers. She also loves The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Wild Swans by Jung Chang.
Project Read Office Manager,

Jason graduated with a BA in Philosophy and an MPA in nonprofit management and international development from Brigham Young University. He is currently a PhD candidate in religious studies at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, studying religious social and economic ethics.
Jason’s studies and professional work have centered on issues of poverty, social and economic ethics, and community-based development projects. Aside from his studies and work, his interests include playing the guitar, camping, and biking.
