Regular Check-ups
Check-ups Lesson Plan
Objectives- Students will be able to:
- Students will become familiar with the process of setting up a regular check-up , what to
bring to the check-up, and how the appointment will go. - Students will understand the importance of having regular check-ups.
- Students will understand the importance of immunizations.
Materials
In Preparation for this Lesson:
- Print copies of the worksheets that are in bold in the activity section (this may vary depending on the level of literacy you choose- E, M, or D). For the Visiting the Doctor pdf, you can use Project Read’s copy or print of the pages you want to use with your student.
- Ask your student beforehand what their concerns are about visiting the doctor (i.e. knowing what to bring, how to make an appointment, paying, etc.) and then review the Visiting the Doctor pdf. Select the sections that will best address your student’s needs.
- Plan for computer access so you can watch the Vaccine mp4. Watch the movie before meeting with your student and be familiar enough with the process of vaccination that you can stop the video and explain any sections that are too fast or confusing for your student.
Activity (for M-level)
- Start by completing Reading Passage 1 with your student. One major purpose of this reading is to show the process that a patient will go through at the doctor’s office, so make sure that your student picks up on those steps. At the end of the reading, review the discussion questions.
- Watch the Vaccine mp4 and pause whenever necessary to explain in more detail to your student the process of immunization.
- With whatever time you have left, review Your Doctor (Chapter 2). Try to address things that your student would like to know most. Good topics to cover might include: “What happens at the Doctor’s office,” “Before you go to the Doctor,” “How do I describe my symptoms,” and “What questions should I ask the Doctor?”
Activity (for E-level)
To make the lesson simpler for students with lower literacy, make the following adjustments:
- Take turns reading paragraphs from Reading Passage 1 with your student. Review any words that are unfamiliar to them, and help them pronounce health vocabulary correctly.
- Skip watching the Vaccine mp4.
- Review Your Doctor (Chapter 2). Try to address things that your student would like to know most. Good topics to cover might include: “What happens at the Doctor’s office,” “Before you go to the Doctor,” “How do I describe my symptoms,” and “What questions should I ask the Doctor?” To help your student improve health vocabulary, make sure to review the “Learn These Words” section that explains various body parts.
Activity (for D-level)
To make the lesson simpler for students with higher literacy, make the following adjustments:
- Complete Reading Passage 1 as directed in the M-level activity.
- Watch the Vaccine mp4 and only pausing to explain if it’s completely necessary. At the end review any questions they have and make sure that the immunization process is clear.
- Review Your Doctor (Chapter 2). Try to address things that your student would like to know most. Good topics to cover might include: “What happens at the Doctor’s office,” “Before you go to the Doctor,” “How do I describe my symptoms,” and “What questions should I ask the Doctor?” Allow your student to do most of the reading, and help them to take notes about any answers they get from the reading.
