Games, Games, and More Games!

Are you interested in using fun ways to teach and learn reading, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar? Here it is. The Project Read library has many fun games that can be used with beginning through intermediate students. Many of these games are for 2 or more players and offer a great way to reduce anxiety while learning.

Students who are just starting to read may enjoy “Boggle Jr”. Each player gets a card with a picture on it. Underneath the picture is the spelling of what’s in the picture. Players then choose the alphabet blocks that match the spelling on the card. When a player becomes more advanced they can hide the spelling on the card in a slot in the card holder to make the game a little more challenging.

“Scrabble” and “UpWords” are 2 more games for beginners through more advanced players.

Scrabble is a crossword game that connects classic wood letter tiles up, down, and across the board to create distinct words. Each word interlocks with another word.

UPWords is much like Scrabble but allows players to build the words in 3-dimension; that is they can use the tiles to build new words ON TOP of a word that is already on the board.

Scrabble, Boggle Jr., and UpWords help build spelling and vocabulary skills.

“Password” is a word association game in which teams of two players each square off to see who’s the fastest at guessing the secret PASSWORD. Players can use only one-word clues, and the fewer words, the higher the score.

“Taboo” and “Scattergories” are 2 games that help build vocabulary and spelling.

In Taboo, each player has only so much time to get the other players to say the word they want them to say BUT… some words are TABOO! Example: How do you get your team to say the word BIRTHDAY if you can’t say the words HAPPY, ANNIVERSARY, CANDLES, PRESENTS, or CAKE?

Scattergories is a fast paced game in which you name “things” in a certain catagory but they must all start with the same letter. For instance: You’re asked to name a restaurant, fruit, toy, Halloween costume, and weapon but they must all begin with the letter C. Be careful and creative because if your answers are the same as your opponents you score nothing for that word. Your answers to the question might be Chinese, Cantaloupe, Cap Gun, Clown, and Catapult.

Boggle and Scattergories are just two of the many games Project Read has in it’s library. Come check it out and have fun!
