Tutor of the Month

Brooks Royal is an ambitious pre-dental student at BYU. He has been with Project Read since this January when a co-worker told him about the program. Brooks believes that he has learned a lot since starting at Project Read. He says that while tutoring can be a challenge in many ways, the biggest obstacle he has found is just finding the time to meet with his student–both tutor and student must make meeting a priority. Brooks believes that the best thing about volunteering for Project Read has been the relationship he has built with his student. Brooks gave some advice to all tutors. He said, “Don’t get discouraged when you don’t know what to teach! They have so many questions, and you don’t always have to know all the answers right away.”

Brooks is extremely busy. He goes to school full time but also works at a jewelery store where he sells wedding rings. He was married last April and is already expecting his first baby this November. When he is not working, tutoring, or going to school Brooks enjoys boating, wake boarding, playing soccer, and spending his free time with his wife.
